Jim and Beth’s Wedding Highlight Video

See other work from Bob Ridge of Indyvisual here. Bob did a great job capturing the spirit of Jim and Beth’s love, as well as the joy of the wedding day. The song is “Where is My Mind” by The Pixies. It was the song that caused them to start talking when Jim played it on the jukebox and Beth was singing along at the bar. This was also the first song they danced to at the reception.

Some Thoughts on a Long Sunday

So, I was sitting outside in my driveway surfing the Net, as I often do at the end of each day. It’s such a peaceful time of day for me. Sometimes I find peace in the quieting down of the day and everyone except the birds and bugs being quiet. A lot of the time, I find peace hearing people go about day-to-day duties with the extra daylight by mowing their lawns or taking out their trash or closing their mailbox after having picked up their mail.

The past couple weeks, I have constantly heard the fair train blaring its horn to warn the drivers at the only-used-two weeks-a-year crossings from Fishers to 38th St. At first it was a disarming novelty. Now I think I hear it even when it’s not close because it has been so consistent. Tomorrow it will disappear for another 50 weeks.

Tonight, it’s just the birds and bugs (and maybe some other animals I don’t know the sounds of). Since I live in the woods (well, in an acre of them on the northeast side of the city i a wonderful neighborhood that used to be a Dairy Farm called Devonshire), I have trees that were planted about 50 years ago that tower over my property. I am always scared in a storm that one of these trees will fall on my house. I have no concept of distance or length, or else I would tell you how tall they were. I’ll guess and say 3.5-4 stories, however tall that is, but take it with a grain of salt. Every once in awhile, often at night when I can’t see, I will hear a branch crack and fall to the ground. Tonight, I leaned back in my Martha Stewart patio chair and looked up at the trees. Sometimes, they are completely still, and other times they are swirling even when I don’t feel any wind. Tonight they looked to be still at first glance, but staring at them I could see them swaying subtly and slowly. I am amazed whenever I look up and the the coolest thing the trees do is whatever they’re doing when I happen to be looking at them.

The sky today was bright blue today. The most wonderful, intense shade of blue. And crystal clear, without the haze of the summer humidity. It wasn’t lighter from the light reflecting off the humidity and making the sky a whiter shade of blue. It was really deep blue with white puffy, “Simpsons clouds” as I described them whe I marveled at the perfectness of the day to Rob, before starting to sing the Simpsons theme song in the car on the way to dinner. We’re not out of summer yet for another month, but already the signs of fall have been revealing themselves, starting with the clear blue of the sky on this crisp, warm day.

At Staples the other night, they had extended hours, and were sold out of Texas Instruments Graphing Calculators. I remember when it wasn’t standard issue to have those calculators. School zones were active again and Operation Football was back on Channel 13. There were kids hanging out at Steak ‘n’ Shake after a football game and girls with their school sports T-shirts at Target.

The air smells different in the mornings, and my memories rush back to my younger days, waiting at the bus stop in the morning with my neighbors and playing Cat’s Cradle with a Chinese Jumprope which I was never really good at. On rainy mornings Mrs. Brooks would open her garage door for us so we could wait inside and still be able to see the bus coming around the corner so we could run out to the bus stop on time. Her daughter Adrienne went to private school, but Mrs. Brooks would look out for us even when Adrienne wasn’t with us. I don’t remember anyone single in our neighborhood, just families or retired couples. Without having to be asked, everyone looked out for each other in Forest Hills (in Granger, IN). It was safe.

These kind of days make me appreciate what’s left of the summer, but get excited for the changes coming in fall. ND football will start soon and the leaves will start turning. i always enjoy the seasonal transition times more than the actual seasons. The signals of change make me slow down and enjoy life and appreciate the little moments and remember the past and allow me to reflect on where I have been and where I am right now, and to ponder where I am going.

My house is finally on the market

My mom and Paulo (my sister-in-law Diana’s dad) have been busting their butts doing repairs and repainting at the old house and the sign went in the yard today. It’s in a great neighborhood with the Monon Trail in the backyard, tons of square footage, 4BR/2.5BA, and a new kitchen. I’m pretty pleased with the pictures, but discovered that I will need to invest in a better wide angle lens to really show off houses in the future. Asking price is $319,900, so if you know anyone looking for a house in Broad Ripple (the Canterbury neighborhood just east of the Monon trail between Kessler and 54th St.), send them my way. Or if you know anyone wanting to get their hands on some Indianapolis real estate, make sure you let me know.

We went to the drive-in

So, Rob and I haven’t been to a movie in forever. There hasn’t been much we’ve been interested in seeing in the theater and Rob just doesn’t like the theater experience too much. The only things I’ve been interested in seeing have been at the new Landmark Arts, but Rob hasn’t been really into the movies enough to want to watch them outside of his home.

Anyway, we have agreed on two movies that we can see in the theater, and we went and saw one of them on Saturday. We went to the Tibbs Drive-In and saw Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Rob thought it was only OK and relied on the stereotypes of the French and gays too much. I thought it was fun to just sit back and let the stereotypes be poked fun at. It was all in good fun and there were some really good lines. PS- the other movie we’ll probably see in the theater is Idlewild, the Outkast movie

Anyway, it was my first time to the drive-in and I was really excited. I felt like I was in small town America back in 1965. It was great. i didn’t realize the concessions weren’t just movie concessions, but a snack bar too. We ended up getting the tradtional candy, soda, popcorn combo, but the carmel apple slices were calling me and you could get burgers and stuff too.

We went in my beautiful Harvest Moon Beige Beetle Convertible which people always stop me to admire, but that’s another post. We put the top down and Rob had to put his seat back so the top of the windshield wasn’t blocking his view. The popcorn was awesome, the temperature was perfect, and the FM radio sound was good, but a little static-y and very bass heavy. The Beetle has dyatime running lamps and you’re not supposed to have your lights on at the drive-in, so I couldn’t have the key turned to ACC for the radio, but someone at VW must have thought of this situation, because the Beetle radio doesn’t turn off until you take the key out of the ignition so we were able to enjoy the radio sound without shining our lights in people’s eyes.

So, I had a great time, and now we are planning on seeing as many movies as we can at the drive-in. I’ll only have the Beetle about 750 more miles, but I’m sure I will have something suitable in the future and we can make do with whatever I’m driving. I wish there were more of the classic intermission commercials played instead of Scion and Verizon Wireless ads, but Rob has like 12 hours of classic drive-in intermissions on DVD off of eBay if I want to see them though. It was also fun to laugh at the local commercials, like the lady from the 80’s with the claw hair in the Pet Island commercial.

Here are some pictures that I took as the movie was starting just after dusk, and also during the intermission, which for us was the end, since we didn’t want to stay for the Wayans Brothers’ Little Man.

Hey everyone! Hope you like the new site!

So, I have been using Wordpress and actually installed it on my web server. It has a lot of cool plugins so I can feed you things form other places I post, like my photos at Flickr, videos at YouTube or blip.tv (haven’t decided which I’m using yet), and other fun things I may find. Basically what it means is that you’ll be getting a lot more of my content on a regular basis now. So even if I have nothing to say, maybe my camera does.

Anyway, more changes coming, while the site is evolving, but you’ll eb seeing more of me!

New Blog

I am switching my blog from Typepad to Wordpress. You will notice a change in template, but most everything should work fine during the transition. I am actually thinking of using Wordpress to rebuild my website. But I will probably do my own install on my server. Anyway, enjoy some new posts…on the new blog…

Adventures in NYC: Wednesday 7/19/06

On Wednesday I slept in a bit before heading out for a walk down 8th Ave to Macy’s and the H&M down by 34th St. Even though Federated Department Stores have pretty much bought everything and made them all Macy’s, there’s nothing like the original Macy’s that inspired Miracle on 34th St. and the host of the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. Wednesday night saw the first introductory general session of the Star Power real estate conference. i ran into an old friend from Charlotte, NC- Kelli Sheppe- who I met at the Listing University in Charlotte in September 2005. Then I went back to the room and called Rob back in Indianapolis and went to bed early.

Adventures in NYC: Tuesday 7/18/06

At the end of July, I went to New York City for the Howard Brinton Star Power Annual Conference. It’s a conference where a bunch of real estate agents from all over the country (and some from Canada and lands beyond) get together and share ideas that are working and what isn’t working and talk about the business and do their best to make it better for everyone involved. So, I took off from Indianapolis and flew into Laguardia where I was greeted with this cheery welcome:

Welcome to New York

I then got a cab to my hotel and ordered a burger from room service before catching a cab downtown to Kleinfeld to try on wedding dresses. I had a hard time communicating what I wanted to my bridal consultant Brooke, because I didn’t really know what i wanted. i don’t know if I do now, although I do have a way better idea than when I walked in there. I do not want a huge dress. I would like some bling, but not crazy fairy tale style bling.

After my appointment was over, I headed back to the hotel where I did my nails and it thunderstormed outside. It was so cozy in the Heavenly Bed. I almost didn’t want to leave when Jon called. Jon was kind enough to host me at Happy Valley. It was dance music, people watching, and hospitable people sharing drink tickets and bottle service. A good time was had by all (including the Fischerspooner dudes) and I called it a night due to having to get up kind of early the next morning. I did stop to pee on the way out though and encountered this lovely disco toilet.
